In this list, we hope to make clear what Camping and Retreat resources are out there that are tailored towards ensuring a fun and safe experience for Trans+ children and families.

Action Camp is a 5-day sleepaway camp that occurs every August in order to bring together young leaders from GSAs and other youth groups across Illinois to learn from one another and shape the Safer Schools Movement. Action Camp is a space often described as “magical,” where youth are able to see their identities reflected back to them, sharpen their critical lens, strengthen their own anti-oppressive frameworks, and actively skill-share and practice what it means to create universal spaces in which all identities are safe, supported, affirmed and celebrated.

Brave Trails is an accredited, overnight, leadership focused summer camp designed specifically for LGBTQIA+ teens. Camp Brave Trails is dedicated to helping LGBTQIA+ youth find their people, place, and passion. Camp Aranu-tiq operates as a typical overnight camp. They do not formally talk about gender, they just let their kids be kids! The camp's daily functions are as follows: three meals together, four structured activity periods, two free periods, snacktime, and an evening activity. Campers sleep in cabins ("bunks") with others of the same age group and choose bunkmates with similar or varied gender identities. Campers are under the direct care of camp counselors at all times! Campers and counselors are called by their name and pronouns. Campers sign up for activity periods based on their preferences. Their meals are nutritious, well-balanced, and offer allergen and vegetarian/vegan-friendly options.

Camp Indigo Point is week-long residential camp for LGBTQ+ youth entering 2nd-11th grade located at Camp Manitowa - Cedar Point in Makanda, Illinois (just outside St. Louis, MO). Camp Indigo Point aims to offer traditional camp experiences — such as canoeing, archery, swimming, sports, arts & crafts, and outdoor excursions— while encouraging LGBTQ+ youth to build intentional community with each other. They hope that by creating a space where LGBTQ+ youth can share their hopes, fears, and stories, they can empower young folks to carry the feeling of queer community wherever they go.

Camp Lilac is an overnight summer camp in Ohio for transgender and gender diverse youth. Trans youth often face stressful, unwelcoming, and even hostile environments in their day to day lives, and depression, anxiety, and suicide are much higher among them. Since 2017, we’ve been creating a safe, welcoming, and confidential space in which gender diversity is the norm. Our program is designed so that campers emerge with an increased sense of confidence in their identities and a strong community of peers and supporters. We believe our camp fills a crucial gap in the lives of trans and gender diverse youth, setting them on a path to success.

Camp True Colors is a place designed just for LGBTQ+ youth, where you can have fun and enjoy summer camp activities in a welcoming environment, while building community with peers and adults with similar shared experiences.
Aside from being a LOT of fun, camp builds self-confidence, life skills, friendships, and memories that last long after the last campfire of the summer.
Camp True Colors has two main types of sessions:
Sessions open to all LGBTQ+ youth (including but not limited to those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, transgender, or queer)
Sessions specifically for youth who are transgender and/or nonbinary, or otherwise gender expansive

In July of 2022, we launched Kin•dom camp - a summer camp experience for LGBTQ+ youth that affirms the goodness and wholeness of their identities. This program epitomizes what we work to create in the world - a culture of life-saving relationship, affirmation, and joy. Camp Echo offers both long weekend and week-long camps to give families a place to relax, laugh, play, and grow together in the beautiful, peaceful woods of Michigan. Escape from the stress of homework, afterschool activities, technology, and bring your family closer together through outdoor fun and teamwork. The definition of “family” is determined by each participant, and all families are welcome at Camp Echo.
Camp Echo offers a variety of activities during Family Camp including traditional camp activities such as swimming, archery, boating and canoeing and arts & crafts, and community-based programming such as talent shows, scavenger hunts, and carnivals. Some activities require sign-up, and others are offered on a drop-in basis.
